25 Dec Hot Buttered Rum

What better on a chilly Christmas Eve than a mug of sweet, warm, silky-smooth goodness that will also get you drunk? Where the hell’s the mistletoe?

INGREDIENTS:

1 lb (450g) butter, room temp or at least not rock hard
1 cup (200g) brown sugar (Dark? Light? Whatever you want, dude)
1 cup (240ml) heavy whipping cream
1/2 to 1 cup (100-200g) powdered sugar
Pinch of cloves
2 pinches nutmeg
A few pinches (autocorrect said punches – awesome) or a teaspoon of cinnamon. more if you’re as spicy as I am

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Whip the butter with a mixer. Add the brown sugar and whip until it gets super fluffy looking and tastes smooth (do lots of taste tests – it’s important for moral support)

2. Alternate adding powdered sugar and cream to mixer. I like my drink creamier than I do sweet, so I’m still adjusting sugar amounts, but max 2 cups or 200g powdered sugar. It looks fluffy but is pretty dense.

3. It seems a lot of people don’t add spices, but I love fucking spices! Add all the spice!

4. Add a shot of Myers dark rum to a mug, add a couple spoonfuls of mix, and a small splash of hot water. I like to whisk it here to make a foam on top, then add the rest of the hot water.

Want to pretend you’re fancy? Top with powdered cinnamon or nutmeg. If you want to get cream-of-the-crop-fancy add a cinnamon stick. You’ll feel just like Harry Potter drinking a fricking butterbeer.

Stick the rest in the fridge or freezer!

ADDITIONAL NOTES, TIPS, AND TRIALS:

  • Don’t use super soft or melty butter! In my second batch I used really soft room temperature butter, and with the whipping process it got a bit too warm and the texture didn’t turn out right. Some of the butter separated out and turned liquid. The butter shouldn’t be so cold you can’t beat it (playing MJ in my head here…every time), but it should still be somewhat firm and solid so you get the proper whipped texture. Way better than a pile of mush, even if that mush is fucking delicious. I mean, I used it anyways. This is how it should look:

  • If you’re drinking this in the middle of the day and not right before bed (Not that I would do this, of course this is just theoretical *cough, hack, ahem*), try sticking a bag of earl grey or bergamot tea in with the hot water. It adds a bit of citrus from the bergamot and a fuller flavor with the black tea. Delicious
